The night before the lottery entry for the 2012 ING NYC Marathon closed, I received a text from my brother asking if I wanted to sign up with him. 26.2 miles in November? Absolutely not, no way! I had all the doubts in the world about me finishing that race alive.
So, I signed up anyway…
Knowing I’ve never had great luck in the past, I figured my name would never get picked in the drawing and in the end I would only be down $11.
Unfortunately, this is not where my story ends…
Today was the drawing for the marathon. The website said you would be notified whether or not your name was picked. By the time I got home from work I still hadn’t received an email. My thought process was they would wait until the end of the day to notify the people who weren’t picked.
Thinking I dodged a bullet, I went to take a nap before heading off to the gym. Not before first checking my credit card statement on my phone, though. The blood drained from my face and I started freaking out when I saw a shockingly large charge from ‘NYC Marathon’ on my bill. How could it be? This must be a mistake.
I called my brother in a panic, hoping beyond hope that he too received this charge. To no avail. My bad luck strikes again!
Wouldn’t you know it that it was my brother’s idea to run the marathon, but of course only I get picked in the lottery. I should have played the Mega Millions! Though something tells me I wouldn’t have had the same result…
So, yeah, I will be running the NYC Marathon this November. Am I nervous? Excited? Scared $%!#less? OH YEAH! But I have no choice but to do it at this point right? Right!
I’m going to be one out of thousands of people running this thing. Look at how packed that bridge is! Hopefully the adrenaline rush of just being part of something so amazing will keep me going all the way!
Running the NYC Marathon has always been something on my bucket list, but I had always planned to do it around the age of 30. I’m a few years early now! This should be interesting and definitely makes for an interesting twist in my journey…
